A stunning New Zealand native lily with attractive strappy leaves and large brilliant red flowers. It grows best in a site with very well drained soil, it will not tolerate sitting in damp soil. It does well in tall pots, where the soil mix can be controlled and the roots are restricted. It can grow to 1m tall and it will slowly spread as a clump, though this is limited if in a pot. It will flower when mature, usually after at least 7 years if grown from seed.
It prefers full sun, and a mix of compost and scoria, pumice or pebbles/rock. It naturally grows on rocky coastal islands in northern NZ - so it should do well in similar garden conditions.
