Kawakawa
A native shrub with large heart shaped leaves, often with numerous holes caused by the native kawakawa looper moth caterpillar. Female plants produce finger-like orange fruits in late summer which are sweet and peppery, and loved by native birds such as kererū. The leaves are aromatic, and widely used in traditional Māori medicines.
Kawakawa grow to an attractive large shrub with interesting jointed branches. They can grow up to 5m tall, but can be kept to a smaller size with regular pruning. They prefer a site that mimics the understory of our native bush, sheltered part shade and plenty of organic matter in the soil.
